Interstellar polarization at high galactic latitudes from distant stars III. Distribution of the polarization vectors – evidence for distinct zones

چکیده
We make a map of interstellar polarization direction around the North Galactic Pole and study the distribution of the revealed magnetic field lines. We study in detail Markkanen’s (1979) cloud and other local features apparent in the polarization map, and compare them with the IRAS 100 micron map. The elongated Markkanen’s cloud (at a distance of 100–200 pc) and its magnetic field lines coincide with IRAS filaments. The cloud throws a shadow in soft (0.25 keV ROSAT) X-rays, as expected from its close distance. Another interesting feature is the polarization alignment around l ≈ 190◦, b ≈ 75◦ − 83◦, with the direction about perpendicular to that of Markkanen’s cloud, hence also perpendicular to the Local Spiral spur. This feature is shown only by stars more distant than 300 pc, and in the IRAS map it is located in a region of enhanced brightness. The differing polarization directions partially overlap in the sky, suggesting the existence of two kinds of clouds with different magnetic field directions. The IRAS 100 micron map is faint towards the sector 40◦ < l < 135◦. Only in this region with little nearby diffuse matter is there some signature of the global magnetic field (parallel with l ≈ 78◦).

The linear polarization of nearby bright stars measured at the parts per million level
We report observations of the linear polarization of a sample of 49 nearby bright stars measured to sensitivities of between ∼1 and ∼4 ×10. The majority of stars in the sample show measurable polarization, but most polarizations are small with 75% of the stars having P < 2 ×10. Correlations of the polarization with distance and position, indicate that most of the polarization is of interstellar...
متن کاملImplications of Interstellar Dust and Interstellar Magnetic Field at the Heliosphere
Tiny interstellar dust grains causing the polarization of light from the nearest stars are deflected sideways in the outer heliosheath regions, along with the interstellar magnetic field. Observations of optical polarization of stars beyond the heliosphere nose, and at distances 5– 200 pc, suggest the direction of the upwind interstellar magnetic field is relatively constant. The polarization v...
متن کاملInterstellar Dust and Magnetic Field at the Heliosphere
The very weak polarization of light from nearby stars reaches a maximum near the ecliptic plane in a position offset by λ ∼ 35 from the heliosphere nose direction. The position angle for the polarization in this ecliptic-plane peak is the same for near and distant stars, to within uncertainties, indicating the interstellar magnetic field direction is relatively constant over several hundred par...
متن کاملTentative Identification of Interstellar Dust in Nose of the Heliosphere
Observations of the weak polarization of light from nearby stars, reported by Tinbergen (1982), are consistent with polarization by small, radius<0.14 μm, interstellar dust grains entrained in the magnetic wall of the heliosphere. The region of maximum polarization is towards ecliptic coordinates (λ,β)∼(295,0), corresponding to (l,b) = (20,–21), while the dust cone direction shows a marginally ...
متن کاملA ug 2 00 2 Evidence for Extremely High Dust Polarization Efficiency in NGC 3184
Recent studies have found the Type II-plateau supernova (SN) 1999gi to be highly polarized (pmax = 5.8%, where pmax is the highest degree of polarization measured in the optical bandpass; Leonard & Filippenko 2001) and minimally reddened (E[B−V ] = 0.21±0.09 mag; Leonard et al. 2002). From multiple lines of evidence, including the convincing fit of a “Serkowski” interstellar polarization (ISP) ...
